Flood Safety Tips

Flood Safety Tips for those living near water.

When you live so close to water you need to know what to watch out for when
it rains.

Flash floods are called "flash" for a reason. The water comes up so fast, you
may not have time to move your car or the roadway you're on may become
a river.

Keep these tips in mind:
Manhole covers can get lifted and moved.
Water levels can change quickly.
Assume that flood water is contaminated:
Urban flood water can carry dangerous bacteria from drains and sewers that could cause disease.

Do not drive through standing water because you never know how deep it is.  It
only takes 12 inches of water to damage your car.

Tires and Wheels Targeted by Thieves

Tires and Wheels Targeted by Thieves.

Tires

Most car alarms protect only the car and not the wheels and tires which could be removed and stolen very quickly.

There are some steps you can take to protect your car as suggested in this article.

  • Park your car in a closed garage whenever you can.
  • Install a car alarm that includes sensors that attach to the wheels.
  • Park in an area with a lot of traffic when out in public. Park in view of surveillance cameras whenever possible.
  • Turn your wheels when parking. This makes the wheels harder to remove because they get stuck in the wheel well.
  • Use wheel locks on each wheel, including your spare.

If you get in an accident, the safety of all involved should be your primary concern. Taking these steps can help you keep safe and also leave you prepared for the claims process after the fact.
  • Check for injuries. Call 911 for an ambulance when in doubt. Don’t move anyone who might have a serious neck or spine injury. Keep your seatbelts on if you need to stay in the car.
  • If there are no serious injuries, move the car out of traffic, if it is safe to do so.
  • Turn on hazard lights and set out cones, flares or warning triangles.
  • Contact the police.
  • Get information from other involved drivers: names, driver’s license numbers, license plate numbers, and the year, make, model, and color of their vehicles.
  • Get contact information from any witnesses to the accident.
  • Use your smartphone or other camera to take photos of the accident scene.
